Replying in iPhone Mail in dark mode - input is white characters on white background

AI-generated summary

Users are experiencing an issue with dark mode in iPhone Mail, where the input field turns white on white background when replying to emails from a TidBits discussion, making it difficult to read. Doug_Lerner initially reported the issue, and simon acknowledged it, asking for the iOS version, which Doug_Lerner stated as iOS 17.0.3. kiefferr also reported the same issue with a screenshot. lindsey confirmed that the issue can be reproduced and has been passed to the engineering team for a fix. Despite follow-ups from kiefferr and thoka, who suggested a possible connection to another issue, lindsey reported no update yet. zogstrip suggested that the issue might be due to a bug in the “view” when replying, and alltiagocom confirmed that the issue still exists, even on an older iOS version (15).

When in dark mode on my iPhone, if I get an email notice from a TidBits discussion and want to reply by email (using standard iOS Mail) something about the email formatting in the email I’m replying to forces the background AND the letters I’m typing in to be white. So it’s almost impossible to read what I’m trying to type in.

Can that be fixed?

Hi @Doug_Lerner, that’s definitely something that needs to be looked at. What version of iOS is your phone using?

Somewhat unrelated, but there’s another issue related to dark-mode emails on iOS devices that needs to be looked into: Digest email: logo color/background conflict (light/dark mode) - #11 by simon.

I’ve got a report of the same issue with white text on white background..

when the user tries to type a reply on his iPhone, the white text on light gray bg makes it almost impossible to read (see the “Hi there” text below..)

it appears to be a combination of the default dark mode styling within the Discourse email template and how the iPhone handles (or mishandles) that styling. Is there a setting the user can switch to change this? Or maybe a quick and easy CSS fix I can add to an email template?

Thanks

Thanks so much for this report — we can reproduce this too and would like to get it fixed up for you! I’ve passed along this report to our engineering team and we will work on correcting this problem. I don’t have an ETA for when it might be fixed yet, but we’ll update you once we know more.

Hi Lindsey! Any chance there’s been progress on this? I just confirmed my user base is still experiencing the issue.

Thanks!

Might this be connected to the problem?

Hey Ryan — thanks for reaching out! I’m sorry to report that I don’t have an update yet. We have this work queued in our backlog and hope to get to it soon!

I was curious how this works and I think this might be a bug in the “view” when replying [1]. Because if you send that email, and load it in the “regular” mail view, the colors are correct :face_with_monocle:

I think they might be stripping too much style in the reply view, or they don’t do the same “processing” to handle light vs dark mode.

  1. or we haven’t found the proper incentation that Apple is expecting to correctly handle dark mode. ↩︎

I’m here to confirm that this is still an issue.
I know I have an old iOS version (15), so I don’t know if in newer versions this has already been fixed?

I never use this feature on other people’s / companies’ forums, so it’s not a big deal for me.
I also don’t plan on having this feature on my own forum, so my users will not have this issue either.

If you ask me “why”: it’s possible that an email notification is no longer accurate if the person who replied had to make changes to their post, so that will create a weird conversation.
