Mollom vs Akismet

AI-generated summary

The discussion compares Mollom and Akismet for spam protection in Discourse. smartwatchme suggests considering Mollom due to its advantages, including blacklisting words, whitelisting users, a tracking image for more detailed user data, Captcha API, honeypot support, rate limiting, and strictness settings. codinghorror notes that Akismet is working well and welcomes a Mollom plugin. However, riking points out that Mollom’s tracking image feature is not suitable for Discourse, as it requires custom tools to post without a browser.

Having the Akismet plug-in is certainly a great addition to Discourse, but I’m wondering if Mollom was ever considered as well? After digging into the API, it seems as though Mollom does have some advantages:

If someone wants to write a plugin for it following the Akismet example, that’d be great!

Akismet is working perfectly for us, though like any Bayesian filter it does take some initial training.

This is useless for Discourse, as without some extremely custom-built tools you can’t post without a browser.
