Discourse and my personal experience using it

Yeah… I’m finding that out. And honestly.. it’s a weakness in the script offering in many ways.
I use a paid script that the plug-in (add-on) installation is much more integrated.. and that script is sadly even now behind what it should be offering to the license holders that paid good money for it.
If the Discourse developers could ever integrate installing the add-ons directly from the script itself without needing to edit a text based config file it would be a massive improvement. But sadly, it seems that as with some other scripts, the developers are set in their way and don’t want to look at what many would consider moving forward.

I have no problems with pointing folks to the script that will work best for them. But for a beginner.. Discourse still does not cut the mustard for self-hosting, especially if you want to run multiple sites on one server instance.
I’ll continue to use it on one site.. but it also remains a major PITA in multi-homing Discourse on one server. Even NodeBB exceeds what Discourse offers in many aspect
