Built a new frontend in Next.js using Discourse API. Feedback?

ncaming215 shares a new frontend built in Next.js using the Discourse API, aiming to replicate a feed-style social media experience by simplifying Discourse’s interface to focus on content delivery. They acknowledge unresolved questions, such as feed curation beyond chronological order, and note this is their first major frontend project as a marketer experimenting with “vibe coding.” In response, MarkDoerr expresses skepticism about the feasibility of the project given Discourse’s complexity, but also shares personal enthusiasm for the Detroit Lions and JJ (Jared Goff) featured in the demo, referencing local pride and alma mater ties (#OnePride #GoBlue). ncaming215 clarifies their intent isn’t to replicate all Discourse features but to curate a streamlined feed experience, and humorously notes that JJ now plays for a rival team. The exchange blends technical feedback with lighthearted, community-driven banter.

Hi all,

Not sure where else to place this, but eager to get some quick feedback. I wanted to know if Discourse could replicate a feed-style social media site. And while there are lots of questions to be answered (i.e. what dictates the feed, beyond ‘time’).

Otherwise, this is my first time really ‘vibe coding’ (I’m a marketer) and building a frontend locally (and using Discourse primarily as a backend).

I don’t have a whole lot to say about this effort…other than I would expect it will be very difficult to pull off given the breadth of Discourse.

But as a product of the 313 and UofM, I just had to jump in to say how happy I was to see the Lions and JJ feature so prominently in your demo.

Curious what you mean—I’m not trying to create a screen for every Discourse options, rather, I’m trying to “shrink” Discourse and just reveal content in a feed manner. But you may be a step ahead of me in logic.

Hahahaha. Well, JJ plays for the enemy now, soooo …
