Topic form templates do not have smart lists

AI-generated summary

Users are discussing the lack of smart list support in topic form templates, such as in the #site-feedback:theme-feedback category, where pressing Enter after a bullet point doesn’t auto-generate the next item as it does in regular post composers. NateDhaliwal reported the issue, and sam suggested it’s more of a feature request than a bug, noting it’s not urgent but would be a nice improvement. renato mentioned they had previously drafted a “composer” field type for form templates, which would support rich text and both editors via DEditor, but the work stalled. gormus expressed enthusiasm for this feature, citing its potential to unblock planned improvements currently on hold due to lack of rich-text support. In a later update, renato confirmed that the feature is now available through the new composer form template type, introduced in commit c8de2f68b01cda4da23710a65d304fb19a181e2e. This enhancement allows smart lists and rich-text editing within form templates, addressing the original limitation.

When creating a topic using a form template, e.g. in the #site-feedback:theme-feedback category, smart lists are not enabled.

When making a bullet point, either using a dash (-) or a number (1.), upon pressing the return/enter/newline button, the next bullet does not appear, unlike it usually doing so in post composers.

This feels a bit like a Contribute > Feature to me vs bug.

I am not sure how easy porting the code would be, thoughts @renato I recall you worked on templates a fair bit.

Does not feel urgent, but is probably a nice touch.

I drafted a “composer” field type for form templates not so long ago, but it wasn’t finished and got stale:

I think this path with an explicit “composer” type and working for both editors by reusing DEditor makes sense.

I’d love to see a composer field type available in form templates. It could really help us with some of the plans we had to put on hold, because there is no rich-text support yet.

Any chances this feature to be revisited? : )

This is possible now with the new composer form template type, introduced with FEATURE: add composer form template field type (#31584) · discourse/discourse@c8de2f6 · GitHub.
