A suggestion has been made to add a feature to Discourse that allows a watched category to be auto-set when a user is added to a group. David_Baker1 proposed this idea, citing its usefulness for managing volunteers in a non-profit organization. pfaffman pointed out that existing plugins can accomplish this, but require code modifications.
David_Baker1 expressed interest in exploring the possibility of this feature being adopted as a core setting. LeoMcA mentioned a related RFC that was previously written but has not yet been implemented due to lack of development time. jmlord revealed that this feature is now built-in, referencing a related discussion on Meta Discourse.
It would be helpful if there was a setting when setting up a Group that let me set a Category that should be watched for any User that is added to the group.
We are a non-profit using Discourse to manage volunteers groups (and replacing mailing lists). When a person volunteers to join a group it would be easier if the category dedicated to discussion for that group started automatically notifying her of new activity. She can un-watch it if she wants, of-course, but it gets her started easier in the group flow.
