- 1 like feature

AI-generated summary

The discussion is about adding a feature for downvoting or dislikes, with bob_the_tomato suggesting a -1 like feature. Firepup650 notes that admins can already add custom reactions on a per-site basis. Moin mentions that certain reactions, like :-1:, can be excluded from counting as likes by default. However, Moin also quotes Jeff Atwood, stating that Discourse is ideologically opposed to downvoting/dislikes. Jagster points out that negative reactions can be used to show agreement with a negative statement, and argues against deducting likes based on downvotes. bob_the_tomato still wants a -1 like feature, while NateDhaliwal shares a plugin with an upvote/downvote system similar to what bob_the_tomato is looking for.

I think there should be a feature that if you react to a post with a :broken_heart: or like a :-1: it goes down a like [1]. Also ya’ll should add more reactions. This is short, but I hope you know what I mean.

  1. and auto flags maybe ↩︎

Admins can do that on a per-site basis already, our forum actually has a lot of them:

And they can also exclude reactions from counting as a like. By default, the :-1: emoji is in that list.

Well, those negative ones are quite often given in the meaning ”I agree, that’s awful” or… how my forum used quite alot after one election.

Here in Finland we use quite often two examples when discussed this context:

  • ”My dog/cat died” — is the ”right” reaction :broken_heart: or :+1:
  • ”It is snowing, again” — again, :pink_heart: or :-1:

So, it depends how and to what an user reacts.

But in this context, I can understand down votes when there is a poll, but deducting amount of likes  Absolutely no.

And yet it could be an option. Like ads are, and pop-ups.

Oh, I never knew! But there should still be a -1 like feature with a specific symbol.

@bob_the_tomato Here’s a plugin with an upvote/downvote system like SO. It’s not exactly what you’re looking for, but it’s kinda similar.
