Hey Dan,
This is something I was looking at a while ago as well. I had a bit of trouble finding these topics in the search so I just went though my post history instead
Here are some similar topics
I am missing the feature to give members of one group the ability to appoint and remove members of another group. We want to trust a few members to manage the members of another group (but not make them moderators).

Can we have an option which adds to the above?
If(you are already in Group A)
You can freely join this group
Else
You must send a membership request
Use case is that we have external contractors. We want to give them access to Discourse. Currently they can freely join the same groups that our staff can join. This creates a confidentiality issue.
If we make joining the group based on membership requests, then I will constantly get membership requests which I will automatical…
Is there already a feature for creating subgroups? I found a post here but it doesn’t provide the solution but mentions a plugin is feasible.
My use case would be:
Parent group:
PythonUsers
Child groups:
Python-Specialists
Python-Admin
Python-Basic
And here we can use @PythonUsers to notify all specialists, admin and basic users. But if I just want to request the input of just the python specialists I use the @PythonSpecialists group tag.
