Automated Signatures?

(Toby Erkson) #94

In the vehicle forums I’m on it’s more common to list what you have [in your sig.] so you don’t have to write it every time you post. This way when you’re asking a question, for example, about if something will work with your motorcycle or not people don’t have to ask, “What year is it?” or “What model is it?” as that info is in the signature line. For me, I also have a link in my sig. that goes the the photo albums I have of how to do something.

I’ve used the sig. line to state what OS I’m running and the versions of Excel I’m programming in.

I guess I’m just one of those anal-retentive geeks that make better use of the sig. than most ::shrug::

I’m for having such data in a user’s card. Just allow admins to add such custom fields to the card. I was rather surprised that isn’t an option since there was no sig. option. :moneybag: :moneybag: <-- my two cents (these emoticons are extremely…odd…still not used to them).

Do the vehicle or computer forums have custom fields to enter your motorcycle or OS version in the sigs? If not, are they really needed for the user card here on Discourse?

(Toby Erkson) #96

Some sites have fields where you can select vehicle model from a drop-down [in the site’s equivalent user card; shows up under their avatar]. Others have the field and ask you to fill it in (free text). With those, yeah, a sig. wouldn’t be necessary, then it’s just getting people to fill it out, which we remind them to if they haven’t and when such info is needed. The sites also have location (where are you from?) and that is very handy because if someone needs help and you are close then you can offer to go over and turn a wrench or just observe and drink their beer :grinning:

So again, if no sig. line that’s fine w/me as long as admins can create custom fields for the user card. For example, on our Discourse forum for a software product it’s good to know what version the person is using and particular products they have. Location, meh, not so much

This is on the cards.

Newb admin here…where/how? Version 0.9.9.9

(Adam Capriola) #99

Look at your preferences: Discourse Meta

Put something in your “About me” field and then come back here and check out your card.

Oooh, gotcha. I was thinking custom fields, not pre-existing:

(Alexander) #101

Could you share a screenshot of what it looks like on existing forums where you can fill out those custom fields? I don’t think I’ve come across one.

(Toby Erkson) #102

Here’s one where users can select the motorcycle model they own through a drop-down list:

Here’s where the info displays in the forum, to the side of the post (like most standard php forums):

Allowing the admin to create such custom fields (like drop-down & free text) would be nice – searchability would be a bonus but not necessary. This is the functionality I would like.

Another where you can enter basic self-info:

For those who dislike signatures, I’ve found many sites allow them to be turned off:

So that could be part of the plug-in if anyone is thinking about it

The way I see it there are two options of the way for us to deal with this feature request.

  1. Close it, this is not going in core.
  2. Move it to extensibility and allow you to create the Godzilla you know and love.

I went with (2)

User signatures
(Sam Saffron) #104

I used to be really against signatures, but I am seriously thinking of setting my signature to:

cd /var/discourse
git pull
./launcher rebuild app
