Summary

This guide will cover how to configure your email notification settings to include or exclude previous replies.

Configuring email settings in user profile

You can control whether previous replies are included in your notification emails through your user profile settings.

  1. Visit your user profile.
  2. Locate the Include previous replies at the bottom of emails setting.
  3. This setting has three options:
    • never (default): Does not include previous replies in email notifications.
    • always: Always includes previous replies.
    • unless previously sent: Includes previous replies unless they were already sent in a previous email.

By default, Discourse includes an excerpt of the post being replied to at the bottom of the notification and up to 5 previous posts if they have not been emailed in the past. This can be adjusted via the email posts context site setting.

Site-wide email settings for administrators

Forum admins can configure default email settings for all users.

  1. Navigate to the Admin Settings.
  2. Use the default email previous replies site setting to control whether previous replies are included in emails by default.
  3. When changing this setting, you can apply it to:
    • All existing users.
    • New users only.

Admins can also control whether to include the excerpt of the post being replied to using the default email in reply to site setting.
