Custom smileys not working

We are experiencing an odd problem with custom emoji. We added our custom emojiset and gave them unique names. Oddly enough, they are rendered properly in the preview pane, but when posted, only the shortcode is displayed.

What could possibly be wrong? Tested with PNG as well as GIF files.
