Customize chat channels with an emoji

AI-generated summary

Discourse has introduced a new feature allowing administrators to customize chat channels and group DMs with emojis, enhancing visual organization and personalization. Emojis appear in the chat drawer, desktop sidebar, and during channel searches, helping users quickly identify channels. For new channels, admins can select an emoji during creation; for existing channels, they can edit settings to add or remove emojis via a simple 5-step process. Group DM members can also set custom emojis for their chats. This update aligns with Discourse’s broader category customization tools and improves usability across desktop and mobile interfaces. davidb highlights the feature’s practicality and ease of use, encouraging admins and group members to take advantage of this visual enhancement.

We have recently added a small quality of life feature to chat channels, allowing administrators to customize the channel appearance by selecting an emoji that reflects the nature of the chat.

:sparkles: What’s new

In recent versions of Discourse we have implemented improved customization of categories through icons and emojis. However chat has been missing this level of customization until now.

This change allows administrators to add an emoji to chat channels and group chats (DMs) within the channel settings. In the case of group DMs, members of the chat can also customize their group chat by setting an emoji.
