Customizing email templates with HTML?

I suppose I’m not the only one who would like to customize email templates with some html code, but it’s not possible, right?

I’ve played around with using html-tables in custom invite mails but what is being sent out is just the default template. And I know I’m editing the right template because if I mess with the variables in the template, I get the translation missing error.

So, given that templates with variables are rather fragile anyway (as I understand it, you cannot remove any variable let alone add a new one) it would be great to clarify what is possible and what is not when customizing email templates. And what pitfalls to watch out for.

Perhaps even some best practices, if anyone has something to offer.

It would be great to have customizable email html-templates. Let’s move this topic to feature category?
