Discourse on nginx WITHOUT Passenger?

Discourse is hosted on nginx. After using the official install guide in 2016, I found a guide to use Passenger with Nginx to reverse proxy serve Discourse. Apparently this was the only way, back then, unless you wanted to only serve Discourse and nothing else.

However, modern days, I have all kinds of issues with this setup. All kinds of ppa’s are dead, Nginx doesn’t natively support Passenger (you have to rebuild it with it), and all kinds of dependencies (such as Docker) are clashing.

Is there a way to not use Passenger with nginx and still reverse proxy?
