I am learning today about the “Reset bump date” feature on the topic admin wrench. It’s not immediately apparent what the feature does and how it works, and when you select it there is no confirmation in the UI that anything has happened.
There are a few topics about this feature, and it seems to have been important to alot of people over the years, so I created a reset-bump-date tag.
The concept of “bumping” and “bump date” feels to me like a relic of old time forums, and not everyone is going to be familar with it. This appears to be its purpose:
My feeling is that we could improve the UI and make it easier to learn what it does through the UI by adding a popup step, e.g. something like:
Reset bump date
The date of this topic is February 9, 2025, but the last reply was March 1, 2019.
Yes, reset date to March 1, 2019 Cancel
If the date is already the same, then the popup could indicate that as well.
Reset bump date
The date of this topic is the same as the last reply, so no bump is needed.
