Have badges been used to give perks?

In trying to seek a way to solve a problem on our site I am thinking that we can grant users a badge and that a badge via a plugin grants perks such as your content will not be moved off to a side category or transformed into personal messages because your post aren’t up to par.

It seems that sticks (flags) don’t work so switching to honey (badges with perks) and only giving honey to those that earn it might be a solution.

Has something like badges grating perks been done or discussed?

We grant badges for lots of good behaviors or accomplishments. But don’t think of it in terms of badges- think “groups”. A simple example is that certain volunteers are manually added to a group called “Volunteers”, a badge query automatically awards a badge to members of that group, and that group has permissions to see a particular category (or some other perk).
