Installing Discourse on TrueNAS using docker compose

Background

I have a TrueNAS server which has docker. I can install apps from the official catalogue, Docker Hub and also use custom YAML files.

I want to install Discourse using docker compose but from reading, there is only one official way to install Discourse which uses Docker but not Docker compose. The single install method is because of various technique, commands and other stuff that is used to install Discourse on to the Linux system.

On the forums it is said that it is possible but would require a complex compose file that would need constant updating to keep inline with the current release.

I have found a couple of compose.yaml that people have used and report no issues. These YAML files do not seem over complex.

So my questions are

  • If I use one of these YAML files (see below), will I encounter any problems such as missing plugins, broken updates?
  • What are the pitfalls of using this compose method?
  • I know there was talk of moving Discourse (on the forum) to use compose at some time in the future, does any one have any more knowledge if this is actually a thing?

Research Links

I’m pretty sure if you search this forum there is a topic about installing Discourse using this method. Just googling Docker Hub and searching Discourse results in this repository (which I’ve not used and am not suggesting for use)

I believe the requirement of using the ‘official installation method’ is with the expectation of support. Civilized Discourse Construction Kit, Inc. provides support via this forum for the ‘standard install’ which I feel is very generous for software which is basically free. But this forum is also frequented by many knowledgeable individual who will help folks with ‘non-standard installations’ I believe there is even a ‘un-official install’ tag to filter for such topics.

You just have to keep in mind, you are treading into the undocumented realm. Here be dragons

I will mind the dragons. :dragon:

I have searched the forums but I could only attach 5 links (as a new user), so I probably have read them.

I have studied the standard and advanced install methods.

I will search for the un-offcial-install tag and see what I find.

Thanks
