The plugins directory is outside the docker container and mounted. So if you are running your discourse docker from within ~/discourse, you can clone your plugins or symlink into ~discourse/plugins locally.

That’s for production, remote installs. If you are talking locally you should consider the dev docker install I’ve linked . Running a production install locally is a bit … funky.

If you want to turn the production install into a Frankenstein that is able to access the local mounted directories, you will need to change the build scripts to give it that access.
