I’m simply changing the way my customers access discourse from a closed community (clubknit.knittingtoday.com) to my primary website (knittingtoday.com). I’ll use discourse to manage comments on the wp blog, but I also want to be able to protect some categories and forums within the LifterLMS plugin for class members only. Do I still need SSO sign on?
If users are managed on the WordPress site and you don’t want them to have a separate login on the Discourse site, then SSO is what you want. You’d then need to make sure that WordPress managed the groups and passed that info to Discourse.
If users have no reason to have accounts on WordPress (like it’s just a wide-open blog and all of the comments are handled by Discourse, then you can just let Discourse manage the users and assign people to a group to give them access to the protected categories.
