Mi piace molto Discourse. L’installazione su DO è stata super semplice; l’unico problema è stato configurare SMTP, che ha funzionato perfettamente non appena ho trovato le impostazioni corrette.
Ecco un po’ di contesto. Sono su un forum di nicchia per l’editing video attivo dal 2008. È un’enorme bestia, un forum Invision Community con cinque milioni di post. L’amministratore dice che dopo gli aggiornamenti ci vogliono giorni interi per indicizzarlo completamente. I membri più anziani, che non si interessano più a creare video, amano ancora usare il forum per scopi sociali, ma questo ha creato una divisione nella comunità.
Così il forum si sta dividendo in due parti. Io ne ho una: il gruppo che è ancora molto attivo nella creazione dei propri video.
Ho già un forum Discourse perfettamente funzionante che non ho ancora aperto all’uso generale, ma sto ricevendo un’infinità di domande sulle funzionalità. Gli staff del vecchio forum chiedono privilegi di moderazione in alcuni forum ma non in altri. La gente chiede sale video, moduli per gli aggiornamenti di stato, blog.
Ho esaminato i plugin di Discourse e, per quanto mi piaccia questo software per forum, sto iniziando a pensare che non sia ciò di cui ho bisogno per la mia comunità. Vedo molti plugin SSO, CMS, WordPress, Q&A. Ho l’impressione che Discourse sia pensato per un mercato specifico di professionisti che cercano di vendere qualcosa, il che va bene, ma noi siamo solo un gruppo di hobbisti che, francamente, passeranno la maggior parte del tempo a fare post spazzatura e a parlare di giochi.
Mi piace davvero quanto sia facile installare e mantenere Discourse. Alla fine, però, ho bisogno di controlli più granulari su gruppi e permessi, e di un ambiente di plugin “di novità” più ricco. Posso realisticamente aspettarmi che l’ambiente di cui ho bisogno si realizzi su Discourse, o sto semplicemente cercando nel posto sbagliato per un software forum?
Ever? Sure. Soon enough for your needs? Possibly not. Discourse is still a relative youngster in the forum space; it’s first public release was only a few years ago, whilst IPB’s first release was back in 2002. So it’s not surprising that the current set of available plugins for Discourse are centered around using it for more serious purposes, because that’s where the resources are. As Discourse’s popularity grows, I’m sure that people will make all sorts of “novelty” plugins.
As for finer-grained permissions, the keyword you’re looking for is “category-specific moderators”. There’s been a lot of talk about it over the years, and it is something that will eventually exist in core, but it’s a big feature that touches a lot of places, and the demand for it from our paying customers isn’t as great as some other things, so it hasn’t yet been implemented.
Above all else since they’re amateur video remixers, and they want a showroom. They’re used to a system where they input a URL for their video, the video is posted, and can be voted up by other users. Such as that they want to see the top five videos submitted for the month, they can get them easily.
I apologize, Jeff. I understand you’re all professional developers. Forgive my colloquial… again, I’m not a professional using Discourse. I’m literally just an internet rando and far from your typical usage demographic.
It’s all right, I took the opportunity to clean that up in the ~10 places it existed here. Some rando also set up a dot-com Discourse site with that word and … I just checked and of course it’s no longer around today, because what do you expect when that’s the baseline standard you’re setting?
