Linking to a heading within a post

Hi All,
I need to write a very long post and would like to include a table of contents at the beginning with links to the chapter titles below. Searching on this forum I found this thread that seems to explain how to do it:

But when I try to follow this instruction:

Hover over the heading to reveal a link icon next to it
image

no icon appears for me.

Where am I going wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi there  welcome

I think this is what you are looking for?

If you are not an admin and you can’t install that or it isn’t installed, you can still make your table of contents with the header links. the chain link on the left of the header is what appears when you hover - you can right-click on the link and copy the link address.

Thank you for your response.
Yes, I would prefer to create the table of contents with the header links, but after typed a header I can’t see any chain link appearing while hovering it:

What am I doing wrong or missing?
Thanks again.

Your screenshot shows the composer, not the published post. Did you publish your post? The raw markdown doesn’t have a link; it’s created when you post.

DiscoTOC works automatically. You do not have to add the links by hand when using that component.

Thanks very much for your help.

Hi,
Thanks to Moin I’ve been able to add TOC links, but now I have a secondary issue: when I click a TOC link I correctly go to that title, but then I can’t find a way to go back to TOC. If I click the browser left arrow I go the previous web page, not to the TOC.

Is there a workaround for this purpose?

Thanks in advance.
