Make Polls Editable Past 5 Minutes (edge case)

AI-generated summary

In a discussion titled ‘Make Polls Editable Past 5 Minutes (edge case)’, biminiroad explains their workflow of moving feature requests from a thread into a closed poll thread for organization, but finds the 5-minute edit limit problematic. They initially tried setting an absurdly long duration (2 billion minutes) but encountered an error shown in a screenshot. Nacho_Caballero suggests 5,000 minutes as a workaround, but warns that editing a poll erases all existing votes — a critical issue for Shirly_Nowak, who seeks to add options without losing results. Moin points to a solution: dynamic polls, which allow users to add options while the poll runs, referenced in a meta.discourse.org thread. The core concern is preserving poll data while allowing edits — especially for admins managing structured feedback systems.

We have two threads on our forum - one for requesting features, and one for a poll about which features matter most.

People request features on one thread and then I add them to the poll, which is a closed thread. This keeps things really nice and organized for me.

The problem is I can’t edit the poll after 5 minutes, making this system a little useless.

Is there a way to force an exception to this rule? Perhaps admin-only?

Nevermind I realized I can set it to 2000000000 minutes. In 3000+ years I’ll come back and ask for a more permanent solution.

Scratch that - I get this error message now when I try to edit it:

I changed it to 5000 minutes and it worked. However, be warned: when you edit the poll, all the existing votes disappear.

Oh… so there is no way to add more options to an existing poll while maintaining the results intact?
I am looking for something like that for my community

There are dynamic polls now:
