Anyone know what could cause a massive spike in anonymous users (other than the obvious “more people going to the site”)? It’s the biggest spike we’ve ever had, in our 2 year existence.

So sorry, I wish you told us a tiny bit earlier, we only retain very detailed logs for 1 week so we can not tell exactly what caused this.
Hosting wise you should not worry, once off changes to traffic patterns are not charged.
In general a 1 day peak that looks like this is probably a rogue script hitting the site aggressively from a few IP addresses.
If this happens again let us know. We are also looking at adding some internal monitoring for cases like this and stricter rate limits for anonymous to handle these kind of anomalies in future.
