Most Posts on a Topic Record?

Discussion came up on another forum over if it had the topic with the most posts (currently sitting at 51,774 and still active), and I haven’t found anything to the contrary.

I found this one about user base, but none of those forums seemed to have one bigger. WOW got to 21k, but that was the best I saw.

I also asked Gemini, but the three it gave me (EVE, WaniKani, and Choice of Games), also didn’t have one singular topic that is still the same at such a size.

Thanks for any help on this, certainly very pressing, matter!

By default, Discourse closes topics after 10,000 posts because megatopics can cause performance issues.

When we founded Discourse in 2013, I had the idea that we’d support topics of any length or size, from 10 replies to 100 to 10,000 to 100,000 or even more! The SitePoint vBulletin forums had a few “mega threads”. But they were not what I’d call discussions. A few were “game” threads which were more post-to-post where there was no presumption that anyone would read every post from first to last. And there was a catch-all Introductions intended to consolidate multiple “Hi, I’m new here” threads. There were also some “opinion” threads which were little more than a series of “I like __ best” with a sprinkling of substance here and there. I guess wheth…

The forum I am referring to is Chief Delphi, a forum for FIRST robotics. It transitioned to Discourse in 2019. The thread I am referring to I think was actually closed before the transition, but in any regard, wasn’t particularly close to 10k before it.

As I understand, the limit can be switched off too, so still wondering if anything exceeds that 51k. A lot of larger topics it seems like have been split retroactively or automatically by the plugin mentioned in your topic, so I don’t really count those, since there are a few ones like that on Chief Delphi.

I should clarify, I’m not the admin or a mod of the forum, just someone asking around for info.

We’ve several decade-old forums games approaching 10,000 replies. But nothing like the 50,000+ you describe.

Thank you! I guess we have a new goal.

I compiled a time period where the 51k thread was most active (about 853 days ago I pegged as the starting point), where there was 32820 posts, for 38.5 posts per day. Bakers Dozen comes in at 20.3.

So based on the rate for the 51k thread, and from 51774 posts, there is 18577 posts between them, which could be covered in about another 483 days! See you then I guess.

The actual rate for the thread is actually a measly 8.3 posts per day, not just because it started in 2009, but also because there was a 3 year period where it was closed, so that brought it down a ton.
