Non profit Member organisations

I’m interested in using Discourse for a membership org with around 20K members. Is this ideal for it?

Yes, I would say so.

hi @JoBrown :waving_hand: welcome to meta

i think what’s ideal is having a clear well-established purpose or goal for your Discourse site, probably even more so than size or type of org. what is the use case and what is the forum going to be used for? who are the target members and how does it appeal to them? if you are migrating from an existing forum, what are the reasons or needs that you are migrating for and how can Discourse solve those?

without more information about your case, it’s difficult to say how Discourse would work for you.

I’m one of the admins for a 82K+ member org, we’ve used Discourse as our internal forum for discussion, debate, resource sharing (thanks to the Docs feature!) and, a Convention Hub for our bi-annual conventions to propose resolutions and collect signatories for them along with posting announcements to the delegation body.

It’s worked great, like any tool (to also repeat what Lilly said above), you need to clearly establish the goal for the tool and ensure membership buy-in, but it’s worked great for us so it should be an easy sell.
