Hello everyone,
I have recently discovered Discourse and have setup a self-hosted instance. Everything works well and wanted to thank all of you for building such powerful and great platform.
As part of my desire to build a multi-lingual community, I am making good use of the core localization features that allows me to “translate”/”add translation” for any post, topic into all supported languages.
My two questions are rather specific (and my apology if the answer is already somewhere).
A. Excerpt for pinned topic
The excerpt for pinned topic does not seem to show its translation when using the language switch. (I by the way had similar issue with banner topic in the past which I had to remove in the end)
Example of desired behavior: on meta.discourse.org, there is the “New to Discourse? Start here!” pinned topic. Switching from EN to FR using the language switcher, it shows the translated title + translated excerpt (or an excerpt in the right language - I actually don’t necessarily need a pure translation per say, it can be a manually written text in the right language). Everything works well here ![]()
What happens on my instance: I have the same king of “welcome” pinned topic, but when switching from EN to FR using the switcher, only the title is changed to FR leaving the excerpt in EN.
What I did until now:
- This pinned topic is written in EN (“post language”) and has a full written translation into FR through “add translation” localization feature (in my case, if a user select FR as language, the pinned topic will reflect on the home page the title in FR, the excerpt in EN but when clicking on it, the topic will display fully in FR);
- I tried to “force” the excerpt for both the EN and the FR using
span class=”excerpt”anddiv class=”excerpt”as I found something like that in similar posts while looking for solutions - it did not work; - Although setup and configured, I am not using the translator plugin or the AI plugin for that purpose (I want to remain in “control” of the translation for the time being and ensure the translated content reads well) - maybe I should? Maybe the AI engine is handling the excerpt as well ?
How did you guys make it happen in the meta.discourse site ?
Is there a specific settings to handle the different languages of post, topics excerpt ?
B. Documentation Index translation
The index of a documentation category is not translated through “add translation” feature and I have no clue how to translate the different links of the sidebar. I think some work are currently being done on that topic, maybe you could tell me if there is a feature in the pipeline or if I need to vote for a topic so it can be part of further enhancement ? ![]()
Thanks a lot all for your help,
Wishing you a great day, all my best wishes for the new year!
Cheers, Terenui
