What are the recommended dimensions for badge images so that one doesn’t encounter the problem described here?
I understand the current recommendation is to edit the CSS. Let’s pretend I don’t have that option and can only control what to upload.

I’ve found that 50x50px badge icons work pretty well. You can go larger, but you run the risk of running over the “n posts in topic” button.
