Hello there,
Thanks for clicking on this. I am quite new to Discourse, and I’m looking for some guidance. What is the best way to either:
Replace the Discourse search bar with a third-party one
If the above isn’t possible, add a third-party search bar elsewhere within a theme
I understand this may not fall within the realm of best practices, but I just want to hear what you folks have to say.
Thanks so much,
Tara

Are you looking for something like this?
When you’re looking for a thread and no results are found, you’ll be offered to search using Google. I think that you should be able to change the search engine (in preferences) from Google to one of the other three “major” search engines.
Maybe administrators could have the option to disallow users from changing the search engine? Maybe administrators could change the default search engine to Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo (or back to Google if they ever feel like it)?
Feel free to ask for more i…

Thank you for your reply! I tested the theme component in question, and while it looks interesting, it isn’t what I am looking for. I want to completely replace the Discourse search bar with a third-party search bar (that isn’t Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc.).

The Add Algolia search to your Discourse plugin does exactly that. You can use it for inspiration.
