This is mentioned as expected behaviour Closed Topics Listed as Unread . But I’ve only just noticed this pop up over on https://discuss.elastic.co as of late, in that I don’t recall previous topics I followed being shown as unread when they are auto-closed.
Is this a configurable setting we can change (that I can’t immediately see)?

It is not configurable, but I have seen a similar request recently here:
We combine setting a topic to solved with auto-closing it after a certain time.
When a staff member accepts the solution, it will be closed by that staff member.
When a topic owner who is not staff accepts the solution, it will be closed by system.
Is there a way to always have the member that accepted the solution show up as the latest poster? Right now it’s confusing to members why this system icon comes up on their solved topics.
Will this solve your issue? @kris.kotlarek will be working on it over the next few weeks.

Yeah that looks super handy!
Thank for mentioning that issue. It was fixed here:

New TopicTimer to silently close topic - similar to whisper. It will be used by … the `discourse-solved` plugin
