It’s a tiny bit confusing, but it’s not a typo. Since version 5, FontAwesome comes in different bundles or variants, solid, regular, brands, etc. In Discourse, icon names default to the solid bundle, to use an icon from regular or brands you need to use a prefix. It helps to see that field’s full contents: “Enter a Font Awesome icon name (use prefix ‘far-’ for regular icons and ‘fab-’ for brand icons)”.
Side note: as of about a month ago, that field searches through the list of icons if you start typing, so the instructions are no longer essential, we might drop them altogether shortly. You just need to type part of an icon’s name (like “cam”) and you’ll see a subset and be able to pick right away.
