The Vimeo thumbnail play button is in the perfectly wrong position for my embeds. Is there a way to use the actual embed code (div + iframe + js) from Vimeo rather than the Onebox? Or any other workaround?

Yup - simply paste the iframe code into a post.
You’ll also need to add Vimeo to the iframe_allowed_domains (something like that anyway) site setting.
