The discussion revolves around the need for a “create only” category type in Discourse. gingerman started the poll, citing use cases such as contacting admins, helpdesk scenarios, and personalized training.
Mittineague suggested an existing workaround using auto-close on a category, but gingerman clarified that this doesn’t meet their requirements, as they want submitters to be unable to see other topics in the category.
Mcwumbly suggested that this functionality might be better suited to groups and private messages, but gingerman argued that a category-based approach provides more granular security.
Mcwumbly pointed out that the existing “Create and See” category permission doesn’t prevent users from reading other topics, and encouraged gingerman to refine their requirements in the original topic.
We have something close to this if I’m understanding you correctly.
Out “Jobs” category has an auto-close applied to it almost immediately.
Effectively this means a member can make an OP to start a topic, but none can post replies.
Actually I dont want the submitter to see the list of topics in a category.
In the above case you explained, it is more like “see only” for everyone. I want “create only” for submitters and “create, reply, see” for admins / moderators
@mcwumbly though it sounds like groups/private messages feature, IMHO it is a perfect fit for categories. If we enable private messages it is enabled for all. handling with categories provide granular security. again IMHO it is the simplest way to achieve the required result for all the below stated usecases
to contact list of moderators / admins without private message
helpdesk for customers in SAAS / any organization
talk to your CEO / ombudsman kind of scenarios for internal usage in orgs
for personalized training / q & a among introvert audience.
Thanks @mcwumbly. I have removed the “create and see” topic referred earlier. My usecase needs “Create only” category. I would update my topic in detail.
