Using LLM translation can provide for more flexible translations.
AI-generated summary
The discussion explores the idea of allowing large language models (LLMs) to serve as translators for the discourse-translate plugin. elmstedt suggests that LLM translation can provide more flexible translations. NateDhaliwal mentions the AI Helper plugin for translating text to English but expresses uncertainty about vice-versa translation. Jagster notes that custom prompts could enable vice-versa translation but may not be practical for large texts. elmstedt clarifies that the desired use case is to translate all site content using an LLM like gpt-4o-mini instead of traditional translation services. sam highlights the appeal of using LLMs for better markdown handling and cost-effectiveness. sam confirms that this feature has been completed and is being further improved, with enhancements like Google indexing support for multilingual communities and UI improvements for translation progress tracking.
Perhaps the AI Helper plugin to translate text to English (not sure about vice-versa).
If custom prompt is allowed then it works that way. But isn’t too practical if there is more text.
(And because we can’t adjust system prompt perhaps needed rules are close to impossible IF translation is done for one language only)
That’s not the desired use case.
The intention is to translate all site content with discourse-translator but using an LLM (e.g. gpt-4o-mini) to handle the translation tasks rather than,
Translation Services Supported
It is particular appealing both cause it is more feature rich, we can teach it better about the markdown format so it avoids translating stuff it should not and voices stuff properly plus GPT-4o mini is just so cheap!
@Falco certainly has this on our roadmap.
This is completed now @elmstedt , see:
We are still improving the feature, recently @nat added indexing support to Google for multi lingual communities ![]()
@keegan is working on UI to see translation progress.
