Full-page Navigation: an alternative to the 'evil' (but delicious) hamburger

AI-generated summary

A discussion about an alternative to the hamburger navigation menu is underway. holden proposes replacing the hamburger, notification, and profile elements with a “Menu” button that displays a full-page navigation when clicked. zogstrip raises concerns about removing the avatar, which would indicate whether the user is logged in.

holden acknowledges the concern and promises to create an updated mockup. In holden’s updated mockup, the avatar is reinstated, and the menu, search, and profile navigation are full-screen. holden also draws inspiration from codinghorror’s suggestion to combine notifications and user profiles.

However, codinghorror expresses concerns about localizing the word “menu” across different languages. strager highlights the complexity of translating “menu” into languages like Hmong, where it translates to “ntawv qhia zaub mov”.

How about replacing the hamburger, notification and profile elements with a button that simply says ‘Menu’ which, when clicked, displays a full-page navigation?

Here’s a mockup:

I feel that removing the avatar is a bad idea. Otherwise how would you know if you’re logged in or not?

Also, what would the menu look like when opened?

You’re right.

I’ll try to put something together…

Here’s an updated mockup:

I love what @codinghorror did here (combing Notifications and User) - Feedback on new 🍔 and user menus - #38 by codinghorror

The Menu, Search and Profile navs could all be full-screen.

I’ll try to create a mockup of what the navs could look like later today. It might have to wait until tomorrow though (very busy day ahead)…

OK so we add the word “menu”. Which has to be localized and might be enormous in different languages. Not a fan.

Can you mockup what would happen when you expand “menu”? That might be more interesting.

In Hmong, the word ‘Menu’ translates as “ntawv qhia zaub mov”*
