Staff notices no longer on colored background?

Hi, I updated my sites today and realized staff notices are no longer on a colored background, they are just normal text and don’t stand out, is it intended ? Thanks.

Even stranger, some are with no background, some have it, what gives ? :eyes:

Is this happening with new ones?

If it’s on older ones then the background colour of those fades over time so they become less obtrusive.

can you give us more info? screenshots? have you made any recent changes, especially css-related? Do they show up properly in safe-mode?

I believe they’re called official notices now.

I did not know that, good to know. Do you know the “fading rate”?

This one does not have background (hyperlink on image):

The image displays a section of a French YouTube channel named RetroCAD, discussing the discontinuation decision of the author and examination of an old IBM CAD 2D software version. (Captioned by AI)

This one does (hyperlink on image):

This image shows an organized list of Autodesk® forum categories by admin/moderator Patrick, accessible in French. (Captioned by AI)

My site is up to date, no CSS changes recently.

And using safe-mode, same behavior.

That depends on the Old post notice days site setting. By default it’s 14 days

Ok it’s set to 90 days for me so that cannot explain the behavior.

2024 was more than 90 days ago, so why do you think this doesn’t explain it?

Good point ! I thought it was more recent. Any way to disable the fading ?

You can do it with CSS. You can find some examples for hiding notices in Understanding and managing post notices. “Old” is what is added after the 14 or, in your case, 90 days.
Do you want to keep the highlight only on custom notices or also on the new and returning user notices?

The max for that setting is 36500 days, so 100 years? That should probably do it.

Probably… thanks

There is a UX request to treat those manually added post notices differently from the new and returning user ones and have them keep their prominent colour permanently:

You may want to add your voice to that to give it a bump. :+1:

Though I also still think it would be a good idea to remove new and retuning user ones after x time as they become less relevant:

Hello,

I just wanted to make a comment on this. If this post is indeed older than 90 days, that’s fine, but the staff notice is only a week or two old. I clearly remember that when I added it, it appeared on a colored background. However, I noticed that it is now on a transparent background, which happened after it was created. This was somewhat misleading. If I had noticed from the start that this notice was displayed on a transparent background, I would probably have noticed the change more clearly. It therefore seems that the background color, or lack thereof, does not immediately reflect the date of the subject. Perhaps a background update changes this presentation later on. I don’t know if I’m completely wrong, but that’s what I noticed. Not a big deal, just trying to understand how it works.

Yes, the color depends on the date when the post was created.

I wonder if it would make more sense to have that tied to when the post notice was created?

For the new and returning user ones it would make no difference as they’re tied to the post creation date, but for custom post notices added manually the timer does seem to be more useful and intuitive starting from the beginning of their ‘life time’. Otherwise you can put something new on and it has the appearance of something old.

Though Lilly’s other idea of making the custom post notices always highlighted is still a better option.
