500 internal server error when editing specific poll in a post with votes (editing other polls works fine)

The error is in a js popup, not in the Apache nor Nginx logs. Discourse error log and JS console error included below. I’m running 1.8.0.beta8 (upgraded live from beta7). No custom plugins.

EDIT (to summarize posts below): The error happens when editing one particular poll in that post, which has 6 polls in total. Editing the other 5 polls works just fine. They all already had votes. The problematic poll is:

I also tried editing it in the rails console, changing the .raw property of the post, and adding a character to the substring of that poll. Trying .save! gives:

NoMethodError: undefined method `index' for nil:NilClass

Adding a character within the substring of any other poll in the same post works just fine.

Could the name I used “name=multipart” be problematic for the parser? Some clash? I’m thinking of the enctype="multipart/form-data" attribute of html <form> tags … I don’t have other ideas (haven’t looked at the ruby code).

I discovered I can edit other posts, but not that particular one. I have a hunch that it has something to do with the actual post content (the form data sent as part of the PUT command). Unfortunately I can’t share it here as it’s a little sensitive material.

Does the post you’re attempting to edit have a poll in it? If it does, have there been any votes on the poll?

Yes! It has 5 single choice polls and 1 multiple choice poll … but the thing is that I was able to edit the exact same post yesterday several times (with the polls already there).

Yes, there have been votes too. But again, I was able to edit it yesterday even after a few votes.

Hmm…you shouldn’t have been able to edit polls after they have votes. To check, are you trying to edit one of the polls itself, or just content outside of the polls?

I’m editing the polls themselves, correcting typos in some of the choices. I’m 100% sure that I was able to do the same yesterday after there were votes, adn the votes looked like they were preserved, but I didn’t pay attention to the exact numbers before and after the edit. The votes were definitely not reset.

In fact, I also wanted to ask in these forums how does Discourse link votes to choices, seeing that they weren’t reset after editing - is a vote tied to the choice index (in which case editing the choice text should be fine)?

I’m honestly not sure, as I didn’t think polls could be edited at all, and certainly not after there are votes. Perhaps @tgxworld has more thoughts (I think he was the latest dev working on polls).

I just had a user create another post with a poll. Both the user and I as admin then voted (two separate votes, on two different choices). Then I as admin edited one of the polls choices. It worked just fine and the votes were preserved. I edited again and changed the other choice’s text, and it worked fine again.

For the other post it no longer works, but editing choices’ text worked just fine yesterday …

Any clues?

From what I can remenber you (as the admin) are able to edit polls only for 5 minutes since their creation.
After this time even the admin cannot edit polls.

I edited it much after the first 5 minutes.

Furthermore, I tried again to edit choices in the initial problematic post (made 2 days ago) and I can edit 5 out of the 6 polls that exist in the post … it’s just one of them that kicks in the 500 error. There is something about that one! It is

[poll name=multipart]
* <choice 1>
* <choice 2>
* <choice 3>
[/poll]

and if I try to add even a single character, I get the 500 error. Editing any of the other 5 polls in the same post works just fine.

If the error was intentional, then I’m thinking it wouldn’t be a 500 error. This all sounds like a bug to me.

Right, I tried editing it using the rails console by changing the .raw property to virtually the same string, except one extra character inside the substring holding one of that poll’s choice. Then, when executing .save! I get

NoMethodError: undefined method `index' for nil:NilClass
from /var/www/discourse/plugins/poll/lib/polls_updater.rb:82:in `block (3 levels) in update'

Now, if I add a character somewhere else (including choice of other polls), then .save! works just fine.

This looks like a bug to me. The parser that cooks the raw post into HTML chokes somewhere.

Could it be due to the name I used for the poll (multipart) ?

EDIT: I note that the last github commit for /plugins/poll/lib/polls_updater.rb says: FIX: Votes lost when editing a poll option with votes. :slight_smile:
