This feature request discusses displaying user titles (specifically department or location) next to names in Discourse chat channels. FabledQuokka62 notes that while titles appear in topics, they are currently missing from chat, which is significant for their organization where location serves as a key identifier. lindsey confirms that titles are not shown in chat by default but explains how to display full names instead of usernames by enabling enable_names and display_name_on_posts, and disabling prioritize_username_in_ux. The requester confirms these settings have already been applied but emphasizes the need for the specific title/location abbreviation to appear in chat, noting it is also displayed on user profiles. They also mention a separate desire to append this location abbreviation directly to usernames.
Hi. Not sure if I’m doing this feature request process right so please direct me otherwise.
Three months new to administering a discourse-hosted space for a very large org, using the Horizon theme. Our user’s Title consist of their department/location which is very helpful to the community. I’m not seeing any option to add the user Title after the users full name in Channels. I’d like to request this feature if it’s already not logged. Thank you.
By Channels, do you mean you want to see titles within a chat channel?
We do show titles by usernames by default in topics (you can see mine next to my name in this post) — but I don’t think that applies to chat at the moment. If you want to show the full name next to the username (also like what you’ll see on my post!), you’ll need to enable the display names on posts setting.
Yes, within the chat channel. We changed the settings to show full name, but in chat channels it only shows the name, I’m not seeing any setting/config to add the user’s title after their username/fullname in the chat channel. Thank you!
Yes, we’ve already switched to Full Names and disabled the priority for username; mostly because there is no controls over username generation. And yes, the user’s location is a key distinction/badge of honor in our community. Usually the first thing we want to know is which location the user is associated with.
The user is placed in a group by location and the location’s abbreviation is their title, so it shows up in the user card/profile. It would be preferable to also force the location’s abbreviation to the suffix of their username as well – I know that’s a separate request.
