Out of curiosity, could that functionality have any kind of fallback on fetching the version from somewhere other than git? Not a big deal if not, it doesn’t really bother me that I can’t tell what version I’m running from the dashboard.

You could override it in a plugin. But note that the only installation method we support is this one. Since you are using an unsupported installation method, we can’t guarantee everything will work correctly.
