Allow multiple accounts to register from the same IP address

:bookmark: This guide explains how to allow multiple accounts to register from the same IP address by adjusting site settings or managing the Screened IPs list.

:person_raising_hand: Required user level: Administrator

Discourse uses the max new accounts per registration ip site setting to limit the number of accounts that can be created from a single IP address that has no Trust Level 2 or higher users associated with it. The setting has a default value of 3 users.

Increasing the registration limit for all IP addresses

To allow more than 3 users to register from an IP address, you can modify the max new accounts per registration ip site setting according to your requirement.

Allowing specific IP addresses

As an alternative, the Screened IPs list is found at Admin > Security > Screened IPs. To allow an IP address, enter it in the New field, select β€˜Allow’ from the dropdown menu, and then click the Add button:

Common issues and solutions

  • Issue: IP address is blocked even after increasing max new accounts per registration ip.
Solution: Ensure the IP address is not already listed as β€œBlocked” in the Screened IPs list. If it is, remove it from the list.

  • Issue: Spam accounts registering in large numbers after increasing the max new accounts per registration ip value.
Solution: Revert the max new accounts per registration ip to a lower number and use the Screened IPs feature to whitelist only trusted IP addresses.
