Even $15 is too much. There are usually domain registrars having sales if you don’t mind moving around between them. And Cloudflare is offering at-cost $8.03 .com domains.

It’s more than I pay, but my point was mostly that I am lucky enough that I am pretty quick to spend $15 if it’ll save me a couple of hours.
I was going to suggest that, and have have some domains registered there, but last I looked they only did transfers.
