Calendar from parent category now appears in all subcategories after update – how to disable?

AI-generated summary

Tonja reports that after updating to Discourse 2026.10.0, the event calendar from a parent category now appears in all its subcategories. Previously, only the parent category (configured in “events calendar categories”) displayed the calendar, aggregating events from subcategories that were not listed as calendar categories. She inquires whether this inheritance is intended and if a setting exists to restrict the calendar display to only explicitly configured categories.

awesomerobot confirms that this behavior change is intentional and that there is currently no native setting to disable it. However, a workaround is provided using CSS within a theme component. The recommended solution involves hiding the calendar in subcategories by targeting the specific body class associated with the parent category. For example, if the parent category slug is events, the following CSS should be applied:

body[class*="category-events-"],
body.category-events[class*="tag-"] {
  #category-events-calendar {
    display: none;
   }
}

This code effectively removes the calendar display from subcategories and tagged topics within the parent category, restoring the previous visual expectation while the core functionality remains updated. awesomerobot also noted that this user feedback would be shared internally for future consideration.

Hey there,

I don’t know if this is a bug or a fix :see_no_evil_monkey::

After updating to Discourse 2026.10.0, the events calendar of a parent category is now also displayed on every one of its subcategories (there are many). Before the update, the calendar only appeared on the parent category and showed the events of the subcategories as well.

Our setup and expected behavior

  • Only the parent category is listed in Admins “events calendar categories”
  • The subcategories are not listed in “events calendar categories” nor are they “calendar categories”
  • Calendar in parent categorty aggregates the events of its subcategories.

Actual behavior
Each subcategory page now shows its own calendar as well.

Questions

  1. Is this inheritance intended behavior since last update?
  2. Is there a setting to turn calendar in subcategories off, so that only categories listed in “events calendar categories” show a calendar?

Thanks for help! :folded_hands:t4:

This was an intended change, and there’s currently no setting to disable it. I’ll share this feedback internally, but for now you can add some CSS to a theme component that will hide it from subcategories.

If your parent category is /c/events for example, you could do…

body[class*="category-events-"],
body.category-events[class*="tag-"] {
  #category-events-calendar {
    display: none;
   }
}

This will hide the category from subcategories and tags within the parent category.
Replace events with the slug of your parent category.
