Can you avoid the subdomain-look, and achieve a top-level domain look, by installing Discourse to a “www” subdomain? I want to use Discourse for a site at the root-level of the domain.

Yes, Discourse can work as
example.com
www.example.com
However, I don’t recommend this unless you are 100% ABSOLUTELY sure you will never, ever, ever run anything else on that domain name.
