I’ve seen Discourse instances at discourse.example.com, and also at www.example.com where Discourse is the website - but what about keeping an existing website at www.example.com and having Discourse at www.example.com/discourse?

Subfolder installs are discouraged because they are much trickier to implement and are prone to further issues during updates.
If your community is your site use the main domain, otherwise use a subdomain.
There’s no appreciable SEO advantage and lots of disadvantages to the approach.
