Cannot tab-complete some emojis: Quota exceeded

Until clearing my browser cache, I faced the following issue: When trying to insert (some) emojis by entering :, then typing part of the name, then pressing Tab or clicking on it, I encounter an error:

DOMException: The quota has been exceeded.

This happens with, for example:

  • :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
  • :family_man_boy:
  • :man_mechanic:
  • :man_bad:
  • :camera_flash:
  •

It does not happen with:

  •
  • :face_vomiting:
  • :point_right:

I fail to see a clear pattern here.

I am still on Discourse 2.8.0.beta6. I’m on Firefox 93. This may well be a browser-specific issue. After clearing the cache it’s now working again, though I still wonder what caused this behavior in the first place. Inserting an emoji shouldn’t be related to caching? Though maybe it’s updating the recent emoji list that caused this. Either way, I believe it shouldn’t fail like this.

can you replicate the issue on https://try.discourse.org/ ?

I cannot even replicate it on my own forum after clearing the browser cache.

Still, I believe just handling this particular failure mode gracefully could be done.

glad you got it sorted :+1:

Not sure would classify this as a bug to sort out. Browsers can get into really bad states when they run out of storage.

If you can figure out a simple repro here I would be happy to reclassify this.
