In this topic, when looking at the edit history by clicking on the pencil, I get the error: ‘The requested URL resource could not be found.’.
Is this consistent on desktop as well, I can see the history here but I am an admin so it does not count.
Strange, I don’t see it anymore. I switched to ?mobile_view=0 and didn’t see it, so I switched back and still don’t see it. Very odd.
could be a rate limit with wrong error, or some network glitch, going to move this to support for now.
The error shown was added as a result of Endless loading of post history when latest revision is hidden/inaccessible. Instead of endless loading you now see the error.
However, the edit indicator still appears for the first few hours. So, whenever a team member adds a hidden tag to your post, the pencil icon is displayed for a while, but you cannot view the edit. Later the pencil disappears and everything is as expected.
OK, so if I’m right, it’s normal that I have this problem too.
Would it be possible to make the pencil icon never visible when it has not to be?
@sam, as I originally accidentally posted to t/81088/20, I also see similar on desktop, albeit when attempting to edit the post:
Better to disable it, especially if it’s temporary, as it appears to be.
That was a nice one
The issue was that we were automatically increasing the public_version of a post, even we were going to hide the revision later in the process because a staff member added a hidden tag.
What made it somewhat harder to “track” was that we would fix the public_version later when the PostRevision.ensure_consistency! runs (it’s scheduled to run every 12 hours).
If the post had already been edited a few days before the hidden tag was added, you didn’t see the error but the edit history with only the older edit. That was also a little confusing because orange indicates that the edit happened recently. Does the fix prevent that change of the color too, or does it just avoid displaying the pencil if there is no previous visible edit?
The fix only addresses the case where there are no visible edits - it prevents the pencil from appearing at all in that scenario.
Your scenario (post already edited → staff adds hidden tag → color turns orange) is a separate edge case. The updated_at timestamp still gets touched, so yes, the color would briefly indicate “recent activity” even though clicking reveals only the older revision.
Leaving that one for now - it’s a minor information leak (users can infer something happened but can’t see what) and fixing it would require additional complexity…
