Discourse failing due to expired certificates, rebuilt app, now discourse not working

I am running discourse on Ubuntu Server 22.04. My Discourse certificates magically expired due to unknown reasons. I have installed discourse with all of the default settings using the default docker install method. After my certificates expired, I tried rebuilding discourse to renew certs with ./launcher rebuild app. Now, when I try to open my discourse site in safari, safari give me the following error: Safari can’t open the page “www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding. Docker on Ubuntu seems to be running fine. I’m not sure where to start debugging this and how to fix this and I need some help. Here are some of my logs after the Discourse rebuild:

./launcher enter app
cat /shared/log/rails/unicorn.stderr.log

My Nginx logs are blank.

Can someone please help me debug this and get my Discourse Server up and running again? Looks like I might need to do something with Reddis but I don’t know what.

Hi Dan

What did you get on the screen when you ran ./launcher rebuild app? Were there any errors in that output that would help narrow this down?

Running ./discourse-doctor can also help if you’ve not tried that yet?

I don’t recall there being any errors when rebuilding the app. But I can rebuild it again if that would help you help me. I am currently running discourse-doctor now and will post the results when it’s finished.

What is the hostname value on your actual app.yml file?

www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com
I just manually entered www.example.com to not display my website directly. But it actually says the correct name of the website which is www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com

@JammyDodger I have provided the answers to your questions. Any chance you might be able to still help me figure this out?

  ## TODO: The domain name this Discourse instance will respond to
  ## Required. Discourse will not work with a bare IP number.
  DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME: www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com

  ## Uncomment if you want the container to be started with the same
  ## hostname (-h option) as specified above (default "$hostname-$config")
  #DOCKER_USE_HOSTNAME: true
○ → host www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com
www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com is an alias for randamckeownkrebsbach.com.
randamckeownkrebsbach.com has address 129.80.235.254

Is that the correct IP of the server? It doesn’t seem to be listening on ports 22, 80, nor 443.

Yes that is the IP address of the server. How did you figure out what ports it’s listening on, and what can I do to resolve this issue? Port 22 is only accessible from my IP address which is why it looks closed from a port scan. My Ubuntu Server firewall is open and my discourse app is running. What inside of the docker image do I need to adjust in order for the server to be listening on 80,443?

If you’re using the standard install then 80 and 443 will be listening as standard. Check your app.yml for the expose: section.

Is your firewall blocking ports 80 or 443?

If the certs expired it’s likely because let’s encrypt can’t reach your server. And then you’re likely to hit rate limits

My firwall is wide open for those ports. I don’'t understand what you mean about expired certs and letsencrypt and rate limits.

what do these do from your server?

curl localhost
curl http://www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com/
curl https://www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com/

connections to https://www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com/ time out, so either that’s resolving to the wrong address or you’ve got some firewall interfering.

danran@ubuntuserver:~$ curl https://www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com/
curl: (28) Failed to connect to www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com port 443 after 65295 ms: Connection timed out

That shows that Discourse is running on the server that you are logged in to.

And that www.randamckeownkrebsbach.com is either not pointed at that server or there is a firewall or network issue that is stopping connections there.

It’s likely that you need to open the ports somewhere else in Oracle. It’s probably a network issue and not a local firewall issue. Permitting Public TCP Traffic to Oracle Compute Cloud Service Instances might help.

I just resolved the issue. You were right. In my oracle instance’s firewall, for http I had port 80 in destination as well as source. Same goes for https. All I did was change the source port in both http and https firewall to be “any”, and the destination port to be 80,443. I honestly don’t even remember making changes to my firewall before the site stopped working, but I’m glad you could help me debug and diagnose the problem! Thank you so much for the help!
