The User Location plugin, sponsored by @WorldIsMine and developed by RGJ, displays users’ registration and most recent login countries on their profile and user card using Discourse’s MaxMind IP lookup. It caches location data to reduce latency and allows admins to exempt specific groups (e.g., Admins, Moderators) from display. While users cannot directly opt out, admins can create an “opt-out” group and add it to the user_location_exempt_groups setting RGJ. The plugin is intended for trust-building and fraud prevention, not granular location tracking RGJ. Users like NateDhaliwal and stephtara find it useful for community insights, especially for francophone users and veterinary resource mapping. Heliosurge notes it pairs well with country flag plugins. A user 祁同伟 asked for state/province-level precision and topic-level display, but RGJ recommends the Locations plugin for such advanced use cases. 祁同伟 reported display issues, resolved by ensuring MaxMind is correctly configured RGJ. The plugin is now in active use by 祁同伟.
Super useful for my francophone community, where the French tend to forget the language is spoken outside their country, and the Quebec members each think they are the only one from Quebec, and knowing what country people live is super precious information regarding what veterinary facilities they will have at hand!
Can it be specified down to the state/province level, and can a theme component be developed based on this to display this location in the upper right corner of the topic/post?
Make sure you have set up MaxMind correctly, this plugin depends on it!
This plugin is primarily meant to add and display a location to a user as part of building trust. Any other application for this kind of logic is more suitable for the excellent Locations plugin.
