Email-in with Multisite gives bad destination address`

I have a multisite installation with email set for one category on a secondary site.

Normally email goes to the category, but now both aliases and forwarding addresses end up rejected on the main instance. Headers for alias or forwarding address do not show any difference besides the STMP relay, and both end up in the Email::Receiver::BadDestinationAddress situation.
