Floating quote button in chat?

A recent Telegram update has caught up with a feature that Discourse Chat has long had (but is not convenient enough yet): quote in chat.

Telegram

New in version 4.11
• View full statistics in your channels and group chats.

Replies 2.0
• Quote parts of text in replies.
• Reply in another chat.
• Add quote formatting.

Link Previews
• Choose preview position.
• Change media size.
• Select link to preview.

Name Colors
• Change your name color in Chat Settings.
• Customize quotes, link previews and replies to your messages.

Code Blocks
• Add nice looking code blocks with syntax highlighting.
• Copy full code block by click on its header.
• Send a highlighted code block using ```language syntax.

Currently, we have to select the message, click copy, and then paste it into the chat box, which seems like a lot of steps. Since we have a floating quote button for posts (below), would it be great to have such a floating button for discourse chat?

I love to use the buttons that appear when selecting a certain text. You can click on Quote, Copy Quote or Ask AI. Unfortunately this is not possible in Discourse Chat right now.

Steps to quote in a topic right now

  1. Select some text and click on the button and you’re done.

Problem

Right now everyone in our team just makes a screenshot from a Chat. They paste the screenshot in a topic. This is a waste of webspace.

Solution

It would be very useful if selecting text inside a Discourse Chat triggered the same quote buttons as in topics. It should have the same buttons: Quote, Copy Quote and Ask AI.

Thanks for considering this feature request.

Feel free to close or merge this topic if a related topic already exists. I searched if someone else already askes this question, but could not find related topics. Search results for 'Select and Quote Chat Text into Topics' - Discourse Meta

Love this part:

I’m also curious to consider whether there are other ways we might make the existing feature more discoverable, as a possible alternative to what your proposed here.

I think this was also suggested here too:

Thanks for linking to a similar topic. Feel free to merge the topics.

Keep in mind that this might conflict with the Principle of Least Astonishment.

To be honest, I expected a floating quote button to appear when selecting text in chat, since it’s also available in topics. But maybe it works different in Chat because messages are short sometimes and it is difficult to implement a floating quote button in Chat because of this.

If adding a floating quote button in chat isn’t feasible, I’d hope for an alternative that takes no more than two clicks / actions / shortcuts. Right now, creating and pasting a screenshot is actually faster.

  1. Cmd+Control+Shift+4 → screenshot to clipboard
  2. Cmd+V → paste in composer
