Integration with embed.ly

For the content that cannot be one-boxed in Discourse, a universal fallback to embed.ly might be better than nothing. Look like a plugin area.

This is a paid service, so that makes no sense. Better to lobby sites to support OpenGraph and oEmbed.

@codinghorror - have seen this posted a number of times on discourse and thought I’d point out that Embed.Ly cards are free to use. Not stirring things up, but just pointing out that they have a free service which is in use by a fair few sites. Their paid version of cards allows you to get better analytics and removes their branding.

What is paid is their extraction service - which by itself is very cool, but not something that most people need.

Needs some javascript / css tweaking, will try it out with discourse, although I’m not too sure how the frontend reacts to a third party script messing with the dom.

Cards:

and an example of their free cards on one of our sites (not discourse, sorry!)

Very unlikely to work with a JavaScript app like Discourse.

Thanks for the heads up. Thats what I suspected.

@codinghorror

Hopefully not wasting your time on this, but what do you think of this implementation of embedly? (for sake of simplicity I’ve just attached the embedly script to the .onebox class). I can look into this further to see how it could become default behaviour.

I’ve got very very little experience in setting up discourse - so hopefully I’m not missing something fundamental when I say ‘it seems to work’. :slight_smile:

This is now irrelevant as we attempt to onebox all urls.
